Measuring Biodiversity on Corporate Premises Volkswagen Environmental protection

A group of interns has developed a tool to map all of the areas where Volkswagen does business, verifying the biodiversity value of each. The initiative contributes to the ETHOS sustainability indicator, which provides an annual assessment of the sustainability of the company’s operations. The mapping included the four production plants (Anchieta, São Carlos, Taubaté and Curitiba), Parts and Accessories in Vinhedo, offices in Jabaquara, the small hydroelectric power plant, six external warehouses and three internal warehouses, making a total of 25 areas.

The tool takes the form of an Excel sheet that quantifies the answers to a survey and generates a grade from 0 to 10 where 6 or above is considered to reflect a high biodiversity value. Of the 25 areas that were studied, only six were categorized as having a high biodiversity value.

New scrubber Volkswagen Environmental protection

At the Taubaté plant, Volkswagen do Brasil has implemented an innovative and highly efficient concept for the removal of paint particles that are not absorbed in the painting process. Over the 12-month period, the new process has achieved a saving of R$6.5 million for the plant.

The new system is called a scrubber and it cleans the air circulating in paint cabins, absorbing overspray (paint residue remaining in the air) through a glass-fiber filter or polymer, without needing to use water or an electrostatic charge. Any paint particles that did not adhere to the vehicle body are retained in mats, forming a dry sludge. This is sent for proper disposal, and is reused as an energy source in coprocessing plants.

The new scrubber has secured a patent for the company from the Brazilian Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and has achieved an environmental impact of 73% in terms of energy saved where the system is installed. This is calculated as a function of the global warming, formation of acid rain, ozone layer and eutrophication that would otherwise accrue. The process also reduces waste in the paint process by 40%.
A technically simple solution with a strong environmental impact, the system was developed by experts from the paintshop maintenance and operations unit. The entire process uses 22 filters in three layers of mats and only requires maintenance once a day, in parallel with cleaning the cabin, and with no need to stop production. It takes just eight minutes to change the mats.

Pró Educar Brasil Volkswagen Education and science

Project Pró-Educar Brasil according to the law for Guidelines and Bases of the National Education, of 1996, all teachers from the basic education should have a higher education degree – goal that the National Plan for Education forecasted to achieve in 2015. However, this scenario is yet too distant from reality. According to the same census, 12.7% of the posts are filled by teachers without graduation.

Which are the purposes?

• To invest in the University education of teachers, aiming their professional emancipation and the development of their skills;

• To contribute to the improvement of the education quality in the cities of the Northeast region in Brazil.

Another 40 pumps will be installed by the end of 2016.

Sludge recycling Volkswagen Environmental protection

The sludge generated by the treatment of domestic and industrial sewage at São Carlos, Curitiba and Anchietaplant is being used in cement production, with the aim of reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfill. The project, running since May 2014 in São Carlos, August 2015 in Curitiba and December 2016 in Anchieta, provides sludge for use in combination with other materials as a fuel for cement kilns. The sludge may even be incorporated into the raw materials used to make cement.

This initiative is a direct result of the teamwork and creativity of the plant’s maintenance team. The sludge is composed of industrial and domestic sewage. As the product may not be used in agriculture, the maintenance team looked for a new avenue for reuse. After research and testing, it was found that it could be used in the cement industry. The initiative has reduced an amount of 300.000 t in 2016 of being destined for landfill of the three VWB plants

Wastewater treatment Volkswagen Environmental protection

Smart technologies allow water to be re-used instead of being wasted. The Volkswagen plant in São Carlos, Brazil, has seen the introduction of a special industrial water treatment system that uses UV light and catalysts instead of chemicals. The technology has improved water quality. The water remains fresh for longer, to such an extent that it can be used to cool machinery and does not have to be replaced as often.

Work safety programs Volkswagen Health

Volkswagen plants use the KAMS (Group Work Safety Management) tool to manage safety at work, using a multifaceted approach based on culture, technology and employees. Volkswagen do Brasil uses a methodology based on the four pillars “machinery”, “environment”, “workforce” and “raw materials”. These pillars define criteria used to assess health and safety requirements for the items they cover.

In addition to the central KAMS system, several other tools are used for the assessment and prevention of safety and environmental risks, and the training of all managers and employees in safe working practices:

  • PIPAS – Planned Inspection Program and Safety Audit: routine inspections and periodic safety audits of machinery, equipment and facilities.
  • ICS – Safe Behavior Index: systematic evaluation of production managers’ behavior and that of their respective teams, to identify and correct unsafe behaviors.
  • Housekeeping: management of organizational processes such as cleaning, health and safety, to reduce waste of resources and time, and improve quality of life and the production process.
  • PPRA – Program for Environmental Risk Prevention: anticipation, recognition, evaluation and management of environmental hazards (chemical, physical and biological).
  • PPE – Personal Protective Equipment Management: research, development, testing, specification, approval and management of PPE.
  • PEC – Continuing Education Program for Leadership: ongoing training and updating of leadership skills through transfer of health and safety knowledge.
  • Prevention and Fire Fighting: management of systems, equipment and practices to prevent and combat fire, aimed at preserving employees’ safety and the company’s assets.
  • Third-party Management: technical, administrative and operational criteria for recruitment, integration and tracking of business activities contracted out by Volkswagen do Brasil.
  • Safety Index: preventive and reactive indicators that produce a “Safety Index” rating, which is discussed monthly with the Board.
